Google is reportedly gearing up to test a new AI agent within Chrome, known internally as ‘Project Jarvis.’ This initiative builds on comments made by CEO Sundar Pichai in May 2024, when he described AI agents as “intelligent systems capable of reasoning, planning, and memory.” Pichai highlighted that these agents can anticipate needs, collaborate across platforms, complete tasks on a user’s behalf, and, most importantly, operate under user supervision.

This AI agent will have the ability to control a user’s web browser to handle tasks like researching, purchasing products, and booking flights. Microsoft has already introduced Copilot Vision, a similar AI assistant that can access browsing activity, enabling users to inquire about text, images, or other content they're viewing.

The report indicates that Google may release a preview of Project Jarvis in December 2024, with a beta version expected to follow for a limited group of testers. Given previous controversies over its AI technologies, Google is approaching the release with caution, especially after criticism led to the discontinuation of one of its AI-driven image tools.

How Project Jarvis Will Work

Designed specifically for Google Chrome, Jarvis can simulate human actions like clicking buttons, entering text, and interpreting screenshots. This functionality allows it to perform tasks like conducting research and making hotel reservations without user input.

Currently, in the testing phase, Project Jarvis is expected to undergo rigorous updates before its public launch. Google plans to invite select testers to help identify any flaws and fine-tune the tool ahead of a broader release.
